August 2014 update

The crew were called out 4 times in July but on the last occasion the missing child was found almost immediately and the crew were stood down. Two fishing boats developed engine problems and were towed in. The first was so close to the rocks in Leonards Cove that one of their crew had to jump overboard to push her off. It is fortunate that the weather was so calm or it could have been a different story. The lifeboat often is called out to work with other groups such as the mobile SAR Coastguard teams to search for missing persons. In July they were tasked to search the river banks from Maypool to Stoke Gabriel but the person was found on the Coastal path elsewhere.
We are into the busiest quarter of the year for shouts. If you would like to be notified when the lifeboat launches you can follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/dartRNLI. You could then follow the position, speed and route of the lifeboat on programmes such as marinetraffic.com John Fenton LPO

Chairman’s Corner

On the fundraising front we have been busy.  On 6 July we attended Kingswear Regatta with the mobile shop. We were also one the selected charities for the event and they have presented a cheque for £1000 for the Dart Lifeboat. On the same day seven of our crew members took part in a sponsored triathlon, running from Kingswear to Berry Head, almost two and a half hours, cycling to Totnes Boating Association’s boathouse and then paddling down the Dart on the outgoing tide. A great effort which raised £1200.
Finally we were given a legacy of £1000 by the late Mrs Brockway.

Alan Makepeace, a new member of the Committee, has volunteered to be the Small Events Secretary and will be organising future coffee mornings as Tracey Lucas will become the Visitor Centre manager. The paperwork for the lease of the property for this is in the hands of the Solicitors. I hope to make a formal announcement soon.

Annual Flag Day is 1 August.
If you can spare an hour of your time please volunteer to Jo Escott at 01803 834296 or email harrye17@talktalk.net   She is still short of people for the final hour 1 to 2pm

For the Fete on 7 August I have acquired a Coconut Shy and Stocks.
I still need volunteers to run these games and help with others.
I also need cake that can be sold by the slice on the day.
I need volunteers to help set up at 9am and clear away at 4pm.
If you can help in any way please get in touch with me on 07889 953 974 or at ed.featherstone@btinternet.com  but just come along and enjoy a fun day!

Deep Sea Angling day with Owen Malia is on Sunday 10 August. Cost £60 per person and all proceeds go to RNLI Dart Lifeboat. Of course, you get to keep the fish you catch. Contact Owen@outlawcharters.co.uk

Finally, our bumper month will see the RNLI Vehicle Gathering and Classic Car Rally at Coronation Park on 16 August. Come and see the spectacle, visit the craft stalls and visit the Lifeboat Station. Refreshments available on the park.

The Lifeboat Station will also be open all day during Regatta 28, 29 and 30 August.
