December 2013 update

Breaking news; On the night that Nelson Mandela died (5 Dec) the RNLI Flood Rescue volunteers from Dart along with volunteer crew from the following lifeboat stations – St Agnes, Looe, Appledore, Exmouth, Weymouth, Swanage and Burnham on Sea were deployed to back up other RNLI teams carrying out rescues in N. Wales and the east coast. RNLI Flood Rescue teams rescued 25 residents from their flooded bungelows in Rhyl, N Wales and other rescues were carried out in the east. That night all sixteen boats in the RNLI F R teams were deployed, either to the coast or as standby. The Dart volunteers were held at Swindon as it was unclear where their backup would be needed. In the end the teams nearer the flooding carried out the rescues and the South team returned to Saltash and Poole. Several lifeboat stations around the coast were damaged by the storms and the tidal surge. Videos and more details are on the main rnli web site. www.rnli.org.uk

The evening at the Flavel on Tues. 3 Dec. at 7.30pm organised by the Dartmouth and Kingswear Society was very informative. It was entitled ‘Devon under water – the 2012 floods and future risk’ Four of the Dart lifeboat volunteers are also on the RNLI S. West Flood Rescue team and two were in the team deployed to Lostwithiel two days before Christmas last year.

The crew only had one call – out in November. A local resident from near Tuckenhay was reported missing and a huge search was launched in heavy rain and high winds. Unfortunately his body was revealed as the tide fell and it was later established that he had died from natural causes.
The lifeboat crew, as well as three Coast guard teams, were out searching for nearly four and a half hours and the boat returned to station after three hours for a crew change and to refuel.

Tony Kirkland will be at the Dartmouth Market with all his Christmas RNLI gifts on Friday 13th and 20th Dec. If for some reason you cannot get there on those dates and would like to discuss a purchase please phone him on 01803 732877.

Those of you who receive Dart D’Tales delivered with By the Dart should have received your latest issue and we will be delivering others by hand. Copies can also be found in the TIC, the Library, the Flavel Café and the Royal Castle. If you are prepared to deliver a handful to your own road please contact me (01803 770761) as it takes many days to get round otherwise and the finances do not allow us to post any more than we already do. The main article is about Monty Halls and Rachel Cole who attempted to row to the Eddystone and back. When you read about the conditions that they had to endure you will be amazed. Since the newsletter went to print the money they raised for the RNLI has risen to over £1900 and more is expected.

Ed Featherstone has volunteered to take over the reins from Harry Escott and is our new Acting Chairman of the fundraising team. He is actively trying to increase the size of the FR team. If you would like to help in any way, either by being on the Committee, by helping at specific events or in any other way, do get in touch with him on 01803 835328. At the moment Ed is seeking volunteers for an hour of bag packing at Sainsburys between 10am and 2 pm on Friday 31 January. Other dates for your diary are the talk by Cdr Jason Phillips of BRNC about "Aircraft Carriers" at the DYC on 12 March. On 20 March we will have the AGM at DYC. It is intended to make this event more attractive to Friends and members of Dart Lifeboat Branch. We have invited Rear Admiral Paul Boissier, CEO of the RNLI, to be our guest speaker. Remember, it's your Branch and your AGM

In past years we have had a Pub Quiz during SOS week which is during the last week in January. Our Quiz master is moving away and we are urgently looking for a replacement. Nothing is fixed as yet; it doesn’t even have to be in a pub, but if you can volunteer to be the Quiz master, or know someone who would do it, please contact Ed.

With very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. Thank you for your support.
