Feb 2014 update

14Jan25SOSweb

The lifeboat crew launched in the dark and near gale force winds on Friday 7 Feb. to help search for a vulnerable person who had gone missing from Totnes. They searched the river banks from Sharpham to the Totnes weir using night vision equipment and their searchlight. Fortunately the person was found on shore alive and well. This was the two hundredth ‘shout’ since the lifeboat became operational in October 2007.

We had a successful SOS week with a series of events. We started with skittles versus BRNC, Police and Fire Services and raised £200 as well as winning the contest! Our thanks go to Dartmouth Yacht Club and PCSO Alex D’Aprano who both organised the event and cooked supper!
Next up was Sink Our Ship on a fine sunny day with half the crew and Rich Eggleton’s dog amusing the crowd with a water polo demonstration in the Boat Float. A good time was had by all.
Then came a quiz and curry evening at The Brill Plaice in Stoke Fleming organised by Eiran Higgins. Finally, despite the awful weather, we packed bags at Sainsburys. We were joined by two crew members in full kit and the tractor driver towed the boat to the car park as the focus of the event. A good time was had by all. John Fenton did a circuit of local schools, briefing pupils and teachers on the work of the Lifeboat. The schools have so far donated £744 and there is more to come hopefully. Yorkshire Building Society also offered a “Brew for the Crew” not to mention delicious home made cakes. The week’s events raised well over £1800.

Coming up we have the talk on 12 March at the Dartmouth Yacht Club. Tickets are £5 on the door and it is open to anyone who wishes to attend. The speaker is Commander Jason Phillips RN, second in command of BRNC. He will be speaking about Aircraft Carriers, which is timely, as the first of two large Carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth II, the largest RN warship ever built at 65,000 tons, will be launched this year. She will shortly be followed by HMS Prince of Wales. The talk starts at 7pm but doors will be open at 6.30, so why not enjoy a glass of wine before the talk starts.

On 20 March, also at the Dartmouth Yacht Club we will be conducting our Annual General Meeting starting at 6.30pm with a glass of wine and starting business at 7pm. Our guest of honour and speaker is none other than The Chairman of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Mr Charles Hunter-Pease OBE. All Friends of the Dart Lifeboat, the Crew and Full Members of the RNLI are encouraged to attend. No doubt the Chairman will have much to say about the current state and the future of the RNLI and will take questions.

On Saturday 12 April we are holding an Open Evening at the Lifeboat Station for all “Friends” of the Dart Lifeboat and local full members of the RNLI. We start at 5pm with a glass of wine, see the boat and the station, meet the crew.

Finally, for those still unaware, we are holding a Gala Dinner at Dartmouth Golf and Country Club starting at 6.30 on Friday 9 May. This will be a star studded night. Our Patron David Dimbleby will be attending and will introduce the evening. Mitch Tonks, of Sea Horse Restaurant fame, Mark Hix and Tom Parker-Bowles, food writer, will provide cookery demonstrations and chat from the stage. There will be wine tastings and a four course meal plus an auction of impressive promises, including lunch aboard a nuclear submarine, VIP seats at Old Trafford, tea and a tour of the Palace of Westminster conducted by Admiral Lord West, an authenticated Arsenal Shirt signed by the first team squad and many others. Nick Crosley will compere the evening, Cdre Jake Moores will conduct the auction and for those with unlimited energy there will be music and dancing afterwards. Tickets are a snip at £75 per head. Contact Kevin John at kevin.john@enigmaks.co.uk  All proceeds will go to the RNLI Dart Lifeboat.
