July 2013 monthly update

Life is waking up on the river and the number of shouts has gone up as a consequence. The crew, as well as family and friends of Jim Brent, RNLI tractor driver and Publican of the Ship in Dock, were packing into the lifeboat station to celebrate his 60th Birthday when the pagers sounded at 6pm last Saturday evening. It took a moment or two to establish that it was not a hoax call before the crew launched to a couple in a motorboat that had run out of fuel and been blown onto a lee shore in the strong winds. They had been in the water up to their waists before the alarm was raised, trying to hold the boat off the rocks. At 9.40pm on Wednesday 26 June the pagers sounded again for a local couple who had been thrown from their dinghy when it hit an underwater obstruction near Blackness Point, some three miles upstream from the lifeboat station. The recent high spring tides have washed fallen trees and other debris into the river. They had reached shallower water and righted the boat in the sixteen minutes before the lifeboat arrived. They were returned to their yacht and the lifeboat crew de-rigged and bailed out the dinghy before returning them to the shore.

The next major fundraising event is the Family Fun Day at Blackness Marine, Cornworthy, on Sunday 7 July. The correct starting time is 2.30pm, not 1.30 as I wrote last month, and it will close at 6.30pm. There will be an RNLI display at 3.30pm as well as the chance to experience paddle boards and canoe rides to get you on the water. The children enjoyed the tractor rides round the farm in previous years and this time there will be a ‘Mini Zoo with close encounters’ as well. There will be a Choir, a BBQ – come and have a late lunch – as well as cream teas. Tony Kirkland will be selling the Dart lifeboat mugs and coasters as well as the new Dart RNLI jigsaw. The Raffle has big prizes; see you there.
To find the venue follow the signs to Blackness from the Sportsmans Arms on the Dartmouth to Halwell Road or look at the Blackness Marine web site.

The following Sunday, the 14th, is Sea Sunday at St Petrox Church at Dartmouth Castle 6.30pm. Do come and support this annual event highlighting all those organisations with a presence on the river.

There is a Garden Safari organised by Toni Scorer and Anna Perry on Sat 27 July from 11am to 5pm. There will be one allotment and six gardens to visit. Entry is £5 per adult by a map which can be picked up at any of the venues on the day. Refreshments and directions will be available along the way. It does not matter where you begin or how many you visit.
The allotment of Adrian Booker is in the Allotment Garden, Milton Lane, Dartmouth TQ6 0LA.
Mrs Christabel Cox is opening her garden at 91A Townstal Road, Dartmouth, TQ6 9LR. Mr & Mrs Ray Langman are at 53, Churchfields, Dartmouth, TQ6 9HJ. Tim & Christine Freeman have a garden opposite 9 and 10 Fairview Road, Dartmouth TQ6 9EN. Mr Price and Mr Greenfield are at Geranium Cottage, Longfield, 3 Fairview Road, Dartmouth TQ6 9EN. Mr and Mrs Newton are at 28 Clarence Hill Dartmouth TQ6 9NY and Chris and Toni Scorer are at Crieff Lodge, Clarence Hill, Dartmouth, TQ6 9NY where RNLI souvenirs will hopefully be on sale as well.
