July 2015 update

Operational update.

The local retained firemen in Dartmouth and the RNLI lifeboat volunteers have been planning to meet and learn about each other’s capabilities and how we can complement each other in responding to an incident involving fire and the river. We have already worked together during the two big boat fires in March 2014 (If you have not seen the videos, take a look at them on those launches on this web site) It has not been possible so far to have a joint exercise but the firemen came to the lifeboat station on 24 June and were shown the equipment carried on the boat. We all then gathered on the S Embankment and watched a Man Overboard exercise carried out by the lifeboat crew.

Fifteen crewmen responded to a launch request on 5 July at 17.24 to a French yacht requesting a tow into the harbour. They were stood down by the Coastguard when the Harbour Authority told them that they had responded to the call.

Five days later a large German ketch developed engine failure 1.5 miles SE of the Mewstone, after having motored for 50 hours. The inshore lifeboat assessed the situation and found that the ketch was too heavy to tow in the sea conditions. They requested the RNLI Severn lifeboat to come from Brixham and take the tow.

On Sunday 12 July the lifeboat took part in the second Sea Sunday service to be held on the Town pontoon. It is unclear whether “Blessings” apply to moving engine parts as the engine malfunctioned shortly after. The engine was replaced the next morning and the lifeboat was back on call 15 minutes before a request from Falmouth Coastguard to join in the search by the Police and Local Search and Rescue Coastguard teams for a missing Stoke Fleming resident. The crew searched the shoreline between Dartmouth Castle and Redlap Cove. Fortunately she was found by the Police in Paignton Bus Station.

RNLI Shop in the Visitor Centre. South Embankment, Dartmouth.
Well our RNLI shop has finally opened and I am delighted to say that we have had a great first few weeks. My fellow volunteers and I have quickly got to grips with the till. It's not as scary as we thought, although I think the RNLI may have stolen it from Arkwright as the draw is a bit vicious!
The shop looks great and we have received lots of positive comments from customers. We are very much looking forward to revealing the visitor experience part of the centre to the general public, but for now it is still going through the final design stage and we hope to have it completed later this year.

I have a wonderful team of volunteers who are all showing great enthusiasm for the centre. We are all enjoying getting to know each other as well as learning about the shop and the RNLI. However, I do still have room for more to join us so if anyone would like to get involved with either volunteering in the shop or the visitor experience section once it is open, please do get in touch with me at tracey.lucas@hotmail.co.uk.
We do hope you'll come in and see us very soon. We all enjoy meeting our supporters and we have some great new stock with something for everyone.
Tracey Lucas.
