March 2015 monthly update

DSCLJ Clinic14

The annual free Life Jacket Clinic will be held at the Dart Lifeboat Station from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 11 April. The lifejackets will be tested by the professional Ocean Safety team from Plymouth. Most replacement parts required and new lifejackets and buoyancy aids will be available for sale from the Dartmouth Chandlery at the station during the Clinic. The testing service is free to all and this year we are encouraging parents to bring their children and their lifejackets to ensure that they still are fully functional and appropriate for their weight and size.

Operational report.
It has been very quiet on the water so far this year, both here in Dartmouth and elsewhere. Thank goodness that last year’s history of two serious boat fires in the harbour has not repeated itself.

Visitor Centre
The local fundraising team at RNLI Dart and their colleagues at Head Office in Poole are delighted to say that the building work and refurbishment of The Old Post Office building is progressing well and they are very much looking forward to seeing the RNLI Visitor Centre ready and open to visitors in the coming months. Once completed the visitor centre will be an exciting, innovative and "hands on" attraction that will draw in many visitors showing the varied aspects of the RNLI, both locally, nationally and even internationally. It will also have a shop offering the chance to purchase RNLI souvenirs.
They are now looking for volunteers to staff the centre. The centre is to be locally managed by Strete resident, Tracey Lucas with the support of Amanda Woods, Visitor Experience Manager at Poole. Tracey is looking forward to working with a team of local volunteers, from all walks of life. "We are looking for anyone, young or not so young, who is looking for something new, would enjoy working in a team, has time available and would like to be involved. It could be on a regular basis or just a few occasional hours. No experience is necessary. Everyone who volunteers will be fully trained to enable them to confidently enjoy meeting visitors and working in the visitor centre".

An Open Evening  for anyone interested in joining Tracey's team is to be held on Thursday 2 April at The Dartmouth Yacht Club, 22 South Embankment, Dartmouth, starting at 6pm. At the Open Evening full details of what is involved in volunteering will be given, along with a chance to hear what is happening at the local lifeboat station. Potential volunteers will also get the chance to pay a brief visit to the visitor centre building which is close by.
Tracey and Amanda hope that the evening will entice many to come along and perhaps to join a new exciting team working in what will prove to be a great addition to Dartmouth’s attractions.
If you are not able to come to the meeting but would like to volunteer or to know more, please contact Tracey on 01803 770233.
