October 2013 update

Monty Halls and Rachel Cole were extremely disappointed to have to make the decision to turn back on their Grace Darling Memorial row. Having faced head winds all the way they decided to turn back nine miles short of their objective, the Eddystone Light, when the weather forecast changed. They were at sea for two days and have raised a magnificent £1548, including Gift Aid, so far for the RNLI on their www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/GraceDarlingMemorialRow web site. They worked incredibly hard and there is still time to add to this.

After a busy August the weather has turned and there are far fewer boats out on the water. The crew were only asked to launch three times in September but on two occasions these were in response to Mayday calls and on the second occasion there was a simultaneous Pan-pan call to a separate vessel. The first Mayday was to a motor cruiser on fire and the second was to a 43 ft. Fairline motor cruiser that had lost power close to Slapton Sands and was in fact blown ashore. The Severn class all weather lifeboat from our flank station at Brixham was also tasked as towing the vessel back to Dartmouth would have been difficult for our D class. The crew did however take part in our first exercise involving a Cruise Ship and there will be more on this in the next episode of Dart D’Tales due out at the end of November. They were tasked to rescue an injured crewman from deep inside the bowels of the engine room.

There will be an illustrated talk by Dr Richard Rawlings in the Dartmouth Yacht Club on Wed. 23 October at 7.30pm. He worked for the P&O line and his talk is entitled “Tall tales of a short Ship’s Doctor.” Tickets at £5 are available at the Dartmouth Yacht Club and the Yorkshire Building Society on the South Embankment.

Tony and Penny Kirkland will be displaying their RNLI souvenirs, including a wide range of suitable small Christmas presents and RNLI cards. In particular there is a new Dart RNLI Christmas card highlighting the fact that it is the whole RNLI team who have to be involved if the lifeboat crew are able to respond quickly and efficiently to our emergency call-outs.
They will be at the “Cornworthy Apple Glut” behind the Hunters Arms from 2 to 5pm on Saturday 12 October.
They will also have their gazebo in the Royal Avenue Gardens during the Dartmouth Food Festival on 24, 25 and 26 of the month as well as having a stall in the market every Friday except the 25th.
